Several Notices were issued by the Department of Livestock Development in July 2022, temporarily banning the transportation of certain livestock into Thailand. These bans concern imports from South Africa, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Italy. The barred livestock include poultry, cattle, and swine.
These notices place temporary holds on the transportation of poultry into Thailand from South Africa, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) has identified highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), a strain of H5N1, in these locations. Birds, chickens, ducks, geese, semen and eggs for breeding, and carcasses are barred from transportation into Thailand for 90 days, from July 16th, 2022, onwards. These measures intend to prevent negative impact on human health and the domestic poultry breeding industry.
A similar ban has been placed on the transportation of cows, buffalos, and carcasses from Cambodia. WOAH has reported the spread of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in the area, which could severely impact the domestic cow and buffalo breeding industry. Transportation into Thailand shall be banned for 90 days, from July 28th, 2022, onwards.
The final Notice temporarily bars the transportation of pigs, boars, and carcasses from Italy. WOAH reported the presence of African Swine Fever (AFS) in the area, which could spread widely and impact the domestic pig and boar breeding industry. Transportation into Thailand shall be banned for 90 days, from July 31st, 2022, onwards.
